About the speaker:
LIU Wei(刘玮)is Professor of Philosophy, Director of Institute for AI Governance, Renmin University of China. His research mainly focuses on ancient Greek philosophy, history of Western ethics and political philosophy, and some aspects of comparative philosophy.
Abstract:
Laozi and Heraclitus are key figures at the beginning of Chinese and Western philosophy, both renowned for their aphoristic and enigmatic styles. Laozi proposes the Dao as the fundamental principle underlying the world’s operation, whereas Heraclitus assigns the same centrality to the Logos; significantly, both “Dao” and “Logos” carry connotations of language and articulation. Besides, they both emphasize becoming and the pattern hidden under it, and stress the unity and mutual generation of opposites. This lecture will explore the striking parallels between their thoughts as well as the subtle divergences, thereby uncovering the shared patterns and different paths that mark the origins of Chinese and Western philosophy.
